Profile Details

Yasmin is an integral part of a new edge movement recognising an unseen space between Black lives and social occupancy. Her contributions have been deemed as progressive and revolutionary in the aspects of family trauma and ricochet effect across generations and wider community. Especially regarding the recent published work which has received international praise and has provided innovative insight and guidance to the racial/social justice topic.

Yasmin comes from a mixed urban background and has developed into a lived experience practitioner. She has nurtured a distinctive aspect and approach to engaging with (young) people within the community. She envisions a support practice methodology that is based on the core principles of youth and community work, peer support and personal life experiences of our youth in and around the disadvantaged communities of Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Having worked in HM Prison Service has allowed her to liaise with young offenders, as such; she knows the pressures faced by many of the young people and possesses first-hand insight into what goes on in their everyday lives - coming from a urban back ground understanding what is happening in local communities on multiple levels. She has identified the need to deconstruct and pull apart the meaning of support and recovery of those from marginalised communities.

Yasmin is responsible for co-creating various projects, workshops and development programmes. Through educating individuals, providing both training and support to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate obstacles/barriers to reach their higher potential personally and within a wider social context.

In alignment to community work she has also co-founded I Am My Sister. A CIC with the mission to address the invisibility of Black girls and women within debates, policies and services around mental health, violence and other social issues. Using the platform to address these issues within these spaces, to advocate the right for Black girls and women’s experiences and voices who are invisible.

‘I wanted to create a sense of sisterhood amongst women based on shared experiences and mutual support by creating a regular safe space and a variety of other services.’

Due to lack of spaces and support we often suffer in silence. Through the work of I Am My Sister, she hopes to one day bridge the gap between Mental Health & Recovery Services and Black women and families within the community.
